Podfic sign-ups have opened at [community profile] hp_podfic_fest at THIS POST. Please consider signing up to read a favorite fic. We would love to have more people participate!

If you are new to podficcing, it's super easy!!!

1) find a fic you like and get permission to record from author
2) install free software (Garage Band for mac, Audacity for windows)
3) open software and click on "record" button
4) read the story! (if you mess up a line, just repeat it, then keep reading)
5) click "stop" button, save project
6) edit out mistakes; highlight the section with your mouse and click delete
7) save project again
8) export as mp3

That's it! Easy peasy.

Podfic doesn't have to be a solitary fanwork. It can be fun to collaborate with others create multi-voiced project, to work with an author on the story, to add visual or extra audio to a podfic. To find out more information on podfic and podfic collaborations, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.

These days, more and more podfics have special effects added for clarity, atmosphere or to add new layers of meaning. Everything from music, to voice filters, to sound effects. To find out more information on podfic and special effecst, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.

Okay, so now I'm woefully behind on this [community profile] pod_aware business, but hey! it just means we spread the love out longer than a week, right?

Podfic is more than just saying words aloud—it's performing them, expressing one reader's experience of the story and sharing it with the world. To find out more information on acting in podfic, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.

(I skipped Day 3 which was recs. Sorry, been a bit busy.)

All about the acting. ;) )

For many of us, podfic is more than just a fanwork, it's a community. We form friendships, support each other, discuss our shared passions and push each other to new forms and heights of creativity. To find out more information on podfic and podfic fandom, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.

There are so many ways to create podfic and so many ways to listen. We might engage with podfic curled up in bed, in our closet, while commuting or at the gym, in our bathroom with makeshift soundproofing. To find out more information on podfic and how we podfic, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.

Sorry I'm a day behind on this. Here we go!

Go, read, leave lots of feedback!
starduchess: (fancy)
So, you've downloaded and listened to a podfic. Now what? Go leave feedback, of course! For both the author and the podficcer and the cover artist and the musician ....

Fan artists love feedback and podficcers are no different. Feedback can motivate us, inspire our muse and help us create more of our art. However feedback on podfic can be rather light. To find out how you can help increase feedback for podfic check out [livejournal.com profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

Everybody loves feedback. Find someone who says they don't love feedback and they'll be lying. Feedback is awesome, but unlike other areas of fandom, listening to podfics many times happen away from the computer. Coming back to leave comments is forgettable and sometimes tedious (hunting down where it was from and all that), but we should all make the effort to do so. It's what keeps fandom alive. So go listen and return the love!

Yay, Podfics!

This is my last post for this week, even though Pod_Aware is running two more days; I just can't run these posts over the weekend.

Want to podfic but you think your voice or your accent stinks? Well, it doesn't. Not at all. Everyone has something to bring to the table. Wait! What accent? "Are you telling the pehples they have ahcents when they do not have an ahcent?" Why, yes, yes we are!

Every podficcer has an accent; sometimes that accent matches that of the canon character, sometimes it doesn't. Every accent is special and brings something to the podfic, it represents the podficcer and reminds us just how diverse fandom can be. Come celebrate accents and learn more about them in podfic at [livejournal.com profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

Now, I'm going to go against this and say that I have an American/Texan accent, but I'm recording Harry Potter fics with a British one. I know, I know, everyone is going to complain at me for this, but it doesn't feel right to do these with my Southern drawl, and I have been practising. We'll see. If it's awful, horrible, I'll go back and rerecord with my normal voice, which one British person, who said my British sounded "normal" to her, told me that my normal voice was "cute". La sigh. We'll see.

Mostly in terms of podfics, the authors have already written the story and the podficcer simply asks for permission to record it. But can there be more?

The relationship between a podficcer and author can be totally hands off, completely collaborative or anything in between. There are a lot of ways podficcers and authors can help each other, check out [livejournal.com profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW for more information.

Collaborative efforts do happen, either two people just decide one day while talking to go in together on a fic or it will start from a fest, such as the one I did with [livejournal.com profile] fire_juggler for the [livejournal.com profile] pod_together challenge. It's an interesting experience, one I recommend having, because there are different considerations going on: the flow of the dialog may need to change, "he said"/"she said"s could be added or eliminated based on the reader's vocals, words and phrases that have a lot of "s" or "p" sounds can be reworked to eliminate or reduce those popping sounds, maybe add in more onomatopoeia. You are making a different product, so you have to think about the writing differently. Whatever the case may be, it's an experience well worth having.

Yay, Podfics!

It is always nice to ask an author or artist or vid-maker for permission to use their work for your own project, whether you are writing an expansion piece to someone else's story or creating a cookie representation of someone else's artwork or recording someone else's piece as an audiobook. This is not plagiarism by any sense of the word for it is not a direct copy even though you are reading their words; it is a new creation all your own and you do still give credit where credit is due for the original work. But sometimes people are intimidated by others to ask for permission or are just naturally shy, and that's where blanket permission comes in handy (also known as a creative commons license).

Blanket permission is a way for fan creators to let other fans know they're comfortable with others playing with their works. It's particularly helpful to podficcers when authors give blanket permission for anyone to podfic their works without having to ask first. To find out more on blanket permission with regards to podfic check out [livejournal.com profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

I have a blanket statement that anyone can read my stories. My only stipulation is that you let me know which story you want to record so I can keep track and where the final product is so I can listen and pimp!

Others have given blanket permissions already, and a huge list is being compiled HERE. Feel free to make your own statements in your journal or profile page. And if you want more control over your work, which is your right, you can give a limited permission statement instead. My advice: don't be scared to put your stuff up for recording! It's fabulous to hear your work come alive over the headphones!

Yay, Podfics!

Hello, all! Lately I've been trying to get my hands on as much Harry Potter podfic as I can download, and there's not much out there, so I have also started recording my own. What's a podfic, you ask?

Podfic: it's an audio recording of a fanfic, like an audiobook, how awesome is that? Fans from all over put their voices out there so you can enjoy fanfic on the go or just in a different way. To find out more about podfic, why we do it and how to get started, check out [livejournal.com profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

There are many awesome things about podficcing, the best one of all is that you can listen anywhere. Just download the mp3 or m4b files and listen in Windows Media Player or iTunes on your computer, burn an audio CD to play in your car, or place the podfic on your iPod or iPhone and take the stories with you!

I love listening to audiobooks. They make long drives or jogging at night fully enjoyable, and it's a great way to enjoy my favourite stories all over again, especially with such limited time in my daily schedule.

There needs to be more podfic, and you can help! It doesn't take much to record a fic -- just a simple microphone, simple free software like Audacity or GarageBand, and a willingness to read fic outloud -- and several communities have great tutorials and tips on how to get started. Check out [livejournal.com profile] pod_aware, [livejournal.com profile] podfic_tips, and [livejournal.com profile] hp_podfic_fest for further details, as well as this series of posts from [livejournal.com profile] fire_juggler Podficcing: Why It Never Hurts To Try and How to Podfic: Pointers to Guides and Tutorials.

It's down to the finale of the MTV Harry Potter World Cup, a fight to the finish between our beloved Potions Master, Severus Snape, and Golden Trio member, Ronald Weasley. And if the duel between Ron and Sirius last night is any indication, this is going to be a battle to the death, as there appeared to be a slew of fangirls out there voting for Ron. In fact, when I think about it, for people who have only watched the movies, not read the books, they may all be voting for Ron, since Severus is not yet shown to be the hero that he is.

So, go vote for Severus! For all the pain and trials he's been forced to deal with, he deserves this win.

SNAPE SNAPE SEVERUS SNAPE!

SNAPE SNAPE SEVERUS SNAPE!

And we only have a few hours till voting closes (4:30 pm EST).

Here is the semi-final round of Harry Potter World Cup!

Sirius vs Ron

Severus vs Hermione

Everyone go vote for Sirius and Severus, so we can have a nice smack-down for the finale!
