Day 1: How we podfic

There are so many ways to create podfic and so many ways to listen. We might engage with podfic curled up in bed, in our closet, while commuting or at the gym, in our bathroom with makeshift soundproofing. To find out more information on podfic and how we podfic, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.
Sorry I'm a day behind on this. Here we go!
Creation: Locate a fic that really grabs my attention and ask for permission to record, either in a comment or a PM. I record on either my netbook at home or my office at work with the door closed during lunchtime with sessions of no more than an hour at a time (my voice goes a little horse after that) using Audacity and a USB mic from Rock Band. I have two screens at work, so one has Audacity open and the other shows the fic. I repeat phrases and lines as I make mistakes, and I do character voices on the fly, so it's imperative that I've read through the thing a time or two.
Editing: I listen to all of it over and over again, editing each wavelet if necessary. If it's long enough for me to have multiple recording sessions, I'll edit each section before recording the next -- helps break up the monotony. :) I have really bad splosives on my "p" and "b", but I have found that "Fade In" and "Fade Out" are my heroes at knocking down the spikes but leaving the word sounding natural. I also have great variances in my spoken volume, so "Normalize" and "Amplify" are my friends there. Other than that it's just a lot of cutting and moving space around.
Music: I add in the music last, at least something for opening and closing and usually between chapter breaks. Sometimes I'll take a part of the music for 4 sec for the breaks or I'll look for sound bites free on-line. Once the music goes in, Audacity slows WAY down, so I make sure my edits are all done beforehand.
Listening: I usually listen on my ipod during jogging or on long car rides and commutes to work, but my ipod has crapped out, so now I'm left with doing them on my smartphone or download the mp3 at work. I'm not left with a lot of time these days, so I treasure every moment I can get. Podfics are such a wonderful way to partake of a story. I wish there was so much more!
