It was supposed to be the kind of scene written about in romantic periodicals, immortalized in sonnets, captured in line and paint. The air was cool and crisp; the sky clear. Stars twinkled above, resplendent in their constellations. Tantalizing aromas wafted out of the eateries--savory duck, sour fennel, sage and butter carrots, caramel candies--while crickets chirped their happy call on the night wind. All around people were enjoying celebrations, except for one unhappy couple.
Severus had wanted to show his new husband the world--visit exotic locales, experience diversity of cultures, indulge in gaiety, writhe in carnal delights. He thought a change in venue, a break from the horrors and expectations of the British social scene after Voldemort's defeat, was the order for the day. Unbeknownst even to him, Voldemort's influence had spread far and wide, collecting investors and cut-throats in many lands. The locals embraced the depths of insanity and openly supported the bigot's propaganda. When the gossip column speculated on Harry Potter's arrival, it was only a matter of time before the Death Eaters came for them, bent on revenge.
Severus and Harry attempted to quietly depart from their hotel but were sighted leaving. The guards were called and anti-apparition wards were placed on the neighborhood, so they fled on foot down darkened corridors and back alleys, avoiding more populated areas. Shouts and footfalls hounded their steps, and twice they were almost apprehended.
Finally Severus located the Rhone.
"Our best course of action is to approach that embankment and follow the river downstream," he said.
Harry quietly accepted this decision, and it pained Severus to see the strain of war return to his husband's features. He wanted to replace it with joy and ease and a plethora of laughter.
Now was not the time for such foolish sentimentality, he admonished himself. They were being hunted, and, sure enough, his vision landed on dozens of points of wand light reflected in the water. If they were not in such peril, it would appear dreamy and beautiful, a vision in which to kiss his lover, but harsh reality had crashed upon them and they had to escape. With remorse, they continued the arduous journey of mere survival.
