Cold snow stinging like needleweed upon exposed skin,
Whipping winds through flesh and bone to sap our fortitude,
Trudging trail runs long and wet through knee-deep drifts,
Sunshine glaring over expansive horizon to blind our eyes.
Our breaths huffing to and fro,
Our hearts with joy beneath the breast,
Our bodies pumping in our flight,
Our minds all feverish with the quest.
Tree branches cracking from frozen water burdens,
A hawk cries overhead, circling in an ever dance for prey,
Animals scurrying to safety behind twigs too little entwined,
Feet crunch endlessly in a weary cadence path.
Our breaths huffing in and out,
Our hearts sing joyfully for guest,
Our bodies dodging left and right,
Our minds all feverish with the quest.
Around a bend, down slippery moss that catches by surprise,
Stands an alcove sheltered from the bitterest of winds,
There within the wolf has led me to my Winter Solstice gift,
Rare and delicate anise, its petals frozen in the frost.
Our breaths huffing back and forth,
Our hearts mingle joy in the chest,
Our bodies now joining at the site,
Our minds all feverish from the quest.
