“I managed to procure some kindling for us,” Severus said as he floated in the cut firewood. The bungalow they had rented was sparsely furnished and rickety. Drafts could be felt through the log walls and from under doors and window panes. There was no heater, and any charms that might have been put on the place had obviously worn off ages ago.

“Wonderful,” commented Hermione. “I was beginning to shiver. Warming charms don’t last long in here, it seems.” She was busy cutting up vegetables for dinner, and he could see her muscles twitch to generate heat.

“There is always a drawing in of magic by the surrounding countryside during this season. That is why we have come to collect the poinsettia flowers now and not at some more hospitable time.” Ever the teacher, Severus droned on about the medicinal uses of said flowers. Hermione already knew all this, but she let him carry on anyway. It was endearing.

Unfortunately, she had news of her own. “I was listening in on the wireless and a blizzard is on its way. Are you sure we should be here? We could always come back later.” Camping in such a remote location reminded her too much of the Horcrux hunt, and the threat of a storm did nothing to assuage her unease.

At that instant, a strong wind buffeted the cabin. “The evidence claims the storm is upon us. In such an unstable environment, it would be difficult to Apparate out.”

She stared at him. “So we’re stuck here.”

“I am afraid so.” He turned back away and began to set the firewood.

Within the hour, temperatures plummeted and several feet of snow layered the ground. Hermione sat mere inches in front of the fire trying to stay warm, but her teeth chattered and her extremities grew numb.

Severus pulled two steaming mugs of hot cocoa out of the fireplace. “Drink. It will warm you.”

Hermione nodded her thanks then proceeded to burn her tongue. “Shite,” she said in a very un-Hermione-like way.

Snape chuckled. “Best if you take that slowly.”

“Right. Thanks,” she said with slight embarrassment, setting aside the mug for a moment.

“I took the liberty of confiscating blankets from the bedroom.” Severus scooted closer to Hermione and wrapped the both of them with sturdy quilts.

She was intensely aware of his lean form pressed alongside her, radiating heat. She had always found him attractive, not in the classic beauty sense, but in his enormous presence and keen intelligence. He was her guide on this journey, but that didn’t prevent them from possibly becoming something more. She felt herself blush slightly and was grateful for the cocoa to distract her.

“How long do you think it will last?”

“Long into the night. We will need to stay close so as not to freeze.”

Hermione found herself blushing more as she thought of the implications of that. Maybe this little jaunt wouldn’t quite be like the Horcrux hunt after all.
