Lucius Malfoy clicked his shoes on the stone floor of Hogwart’s dungeons, enjoying the echo they made off the walls as they pronounced his arrival and his importance. He stopped before the painting of the Snake in the Garden of Eve and rapped his cane on the door. He had but seconds to wait before it was opened and Severus Snape glared back at him.
“Lucius. Personal or professional?”
“A bit of both. May I come in?” Words were never minced between them. Severus simply opened the door further, stepping back and allowing him entrance. Lucius walked through and took the seat opposite Severus’. Severus poured them both two fingers of Firewhiskey and handed him one then reclaimed his own seat.
After a moment to enjoy the burn, Lucius got right down to it. “We are beginning to infiltrate the lower levels of the Ministry, replacing subordinates with our own controls. Information gathering has been more difficult than expected, so I came to garner your assistance.”
Severus’ expression didn’t change any. “You need a potion to do what?”
Lucius smiled a bit at his friend’s bluntness. “Something to loosen tongues.”
“And other elixirs aren’t working? I find that surprising, especially at the level of intelligence with which most of the government is run.” It was clear Severus held no high opinion of Ministry officials.
“On the contrary, those do work. Unfortunately, a few of our key targets never indulge, so we need another method.” Lucius took another sip of his drink. He had faith that Severus would figure it out soon and was not disappointed.
“Veritaserum is a controlled substance.”
“But highly effective, and the Dark Lord’s wishes are to be granted.” He tilted his head in persuasion, eyes light with truth.
Severus stared at him in contemplation, his face cold and impersonal.
“What prize is to be gained?” he finally asked.
Lucius took another sip before answering. “Several departments, including the Muggleborn Registration Office. Possibly the Minister himself.” Lucius mentioned those knowing that Severus would like to get his hands on Umbridge.
At that Severus rose and headed in the direction of his potions stores. Lucius sat patiently waiting, finishing the warm drink.
He returned a minute later. “Here. It’s in an unmarked vial. Do not misplace it.” He handed the Veritaserum to Lucius, who rose upon receiving it.
“Delightful doing business with you.”
Severus smirked. “And here I hoped part of it was personal.”
“Oh, it was, Severus,” Lucius said, smiling in contentment. “But now I must take my leave. Until next time.”
Lucius strode out of Severus’ quarters, feeling good. He examined the vial in his hand and smiled more broadly. The extra touch of dragon’s blood added to the potion would turn it from a truth serum to a persuasion serum, Lucius was positive. He would write up a journal entry afterwards, “The Thirteenth Use for Dragon’s Blood,” and possibly become more famous than Albus Dumbledore.
Oh, yes, this was going to be very personal indeed.
