snupin_ldws round 1 week 2 prompt: trapped at the full moon, "zero"
Snape was in a hall of sorts. The rickety floorboards creaked as he walked the length of the room, trying to gather some evidence of where he was. Daylight was rapidly dwindling into twilight, casting deep shadows into the corners -- hiding something.
The hall felt strange, like it had never been used, yet he was sure something had taken place here before.
He heard a low growling coming from the corner. “Who’s there? Show yourself,” he said with bravado, hoping to intimidate whatever animal might be there.
“Severus?” croaked a familiar voice.
“Lupin?” Letting his eyes fully adjust to the shadows, Snape could make out a trembling figure pressed against the wall.
“No, Severus. Don’t come near! You must run. Get away.” The eyes that met Snape’s were wild and glowing amber. The voice was desperate, scared.
“Why? What has happened?”
“The moon -- she will come out any minute. I have no potion. You shouldn’t be here!”
Snape saw that darkness had already fallen. “You lack control over the transformation, then?”
“Yes,” Lupin whimpered. “Please, leave. I don’t want to hurt you!”
Unfortunately, Snape could find no way out. He wasn’t incompetent, but he felt like a zero.
Cracks of bone echoed in the hall as the transformation began and a crescendo of screams filled the space. Light shown down on them, and Snape glanced up at a shining full moon.
A howl sent shivers down his spine.
Snape turned just as a huge, snarling creature grabbed him and began tearing at his flesh.
While screaming, memories came flooding back to him. An endless stream of images paraded before Snape’s inner eye, night after night of this same scenario.
He’d always hoped he’d end up together with Lupin.
He’d just never imagined that they’d end up together -- forever -- in Hell.
