snarry_ldws week4 prompt: character death and "That ... that looks like magic." Originally wrote this entry but decided to go for something different this week.
I remember stupidly thinking That ... that looks like magic, but I didn't recognize the spell that hit me. Something foreign from the Middle East. It's doubtful that a counter curse or potion could be found in time to save me as pain lanced through my nerves and skin hissed with acidity, breathing shallow, vision blurry. Sounds came from all directions as dozens of aurors took out the renegade warlocks, but it was hard to concentrate on them. My attention was diverted inward.
So, this was it, my death at long last. For years I hovered by that door expecting each moment in the Dark Lord's presence to contain my final gasp, and for one painful moment at the height of battle it did appear to be true. Then, the boy was there, taking those memories I needed to impart, allowing me to find solace in the eyes of my old flame. Potions were consumed and healing spells were reaped upon my carcass and somehow I miraculously survived. The recovery was long and dreadful, both the physical and the social, but Harry was there every step of the road. We grew close. Respect became admiration. Admiration became affection. Affection finally became love.
I could hear his voice now, panicked and pleading. The scene was so like that one from years ago that I had to chuckle, even as my blood poured out over the pavement. Memories need not be shared this time, though; he already knew them all. He just needed one last reassurance of all that we had. Remembering the words, I repeated them. "Look at me." He snapped his beautiful, grief-stricken eyes to mine.
Acceptance calmed him and understanding replaced loss, for in each other's eyes we found peace--paradise--and even in death it would be enough.
