shadowycat for the beta. Title modified from a Robert Frost poem.
It was late when Snape finally made it to the Headmaster’s Tower. He felt exhausted and close to despair--so many things wrong. Albus dead. Potter on the run. The Carrows in residence. This should have been a night for feasting and frolicking, but no merriment could be had under the Dark Lord’s reign.
It still managed to give him a headache.
He lit a few candles, just barely enough light to see the bed corners, though he knew he would not sleep in it. He perched on a windowsill, staring into the blackness beyond.
“Hey, lover, it will all be over soon,” said a voice next to his ear.
“Not soon enough,” he replied, “and yet, not enough. Potter’s still a child.”
“Harry will manage; he always does.”
Snape growled. “If only he hadn’t seen….”
Arms wrapped around to give him comfort. “It does make things more difficult, but I know you’ll aide him when the time is right.”
Snape was quiet for awhile.
“You know I won’t survive this, and neither can he.”
“Then we’ll all be one, big, snarky family. I look forward to it.”
Snape turned his head and received a kiss from Sirius’ ghostly lips.
